The ASGI report, edited by the Sciabaca & Oruka project, detailing legal disputes arising from Italian-Tunisian cooperation on migration, is published in four languages.
Cooperation between Italy and Tunisia on migration has significantly intensified in recent years, with Tunisia assuming a pivotal role as a transit country. Policies restricting mobility have been refined through mutually reinforcing policy measures and legal frameworks, necessitating the development of multilevel legal strategies.
These strategies require collaborative efforts among lawyers, journalists, researchers, civil society organisations, and people on the move. This blending of perspectives and experiences allows for a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics at play and aims to expose the true implications of border externalisation policies, ultimately seeking to dismantle barriers that impede freedom of movement.
The report highlights legal actions undertaken as part of ASGI’s Sciabaca & Oruka project to challenge Italian policies that support mobility restrictions in Tunisia, including substantial funding for voluntary repatriation programmes and technical and logistical support to Tunisia’s National Guard.
