On the occasion of the presentation of the new report by the Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe concerning the situation in the Mediterranean, ASGI is pleased to invite you to the conference “RESCUING LIVES IN THE CENTRAL MEDITERRANEAN: CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES”, organized in collaboration with the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) of Malta and Aditus, with the support of the Fondation Assistance International (FAI) – to be held online (Zoom and Live FB) on the 26th of March 2021, from 09:30.
The meeting aims at providing an overview of the recent non-intervention and push-back practices carried out in particular by the Italian and Maltese authorities and an assessment of their (il)legality. A focus is proposed on the recent decision by the UN Human Rights Committee, dating 27 January 2021, concerning the omission by Italy and Malta to take action in a SAR operation conducted at the high seas by the Libyan authorities.
Speakers, in addition to Commissioner Dunja Mijatović, will be Stefania Mancini (FAI), Lucia Gennari (ASGI), Francesca De Vittor (Università Cattolica di Milano and ASGI), Neil Falzon (Aditus), Katrine Camilleri (JRS) and Roberta Greco (Saccucci&Partners law firm and member of the defence team of the victims in the dispute recently decided by the ICCPR Committee). Ulrich Stege (International University College of Turin and ASGI) will moderate the interventions and the closing debate.
